Reinforcers Can Help Motivate Children!
Reaching and rewarding children on the spectrum can be a real challenge. Each child is different and will be motivated by different things. Parents and Therapists have suggested these reinforcers for your consideration.
You'll note that these items are rich with light, sound, texture or movement.
Reinforcers motivate children to learn new skills. Often times, children with autism are not readily motivated by social feedback or other natural consequences received from parents, teachers or peers. Insensitivity to social consequences and signals is a core aspect of the disorder.
How To Find A Powerful Reinforcer:
To find an effective reinforcer may be process of trial and error. For example, provide several touchable items, and record the order in which the child went for each item or the amount of time spent with each. Very likely, the first item chosen will end being the child's preferred reinforcer.
